"To preserve the innate serenity of the mind a yogin should be happy for those who are happy, be compassionate for those who are unhappy, be delighted for those who are virtuous, and be indifferent toward the wicked."
- Yoga Sutras 1.33

July 2006:

I was chatting with a friend about life as many of us do, thinking of the easiest and best way to act when faced with challenge.  This quote from the sutras makes it all really easy!

One will be happy and joyous for those that are happy because for many people happiness is a rare event.  Compassion as the Dalai Lama speaks of is the way to free attachment to the problem, and therefore eliminating it.  Being delighted for the opportunity to see and notice those who are virtuous and give their life to the practice of positive living, peace and happiness.  Indifference is a wonderful way to sever the energy and time to those people of wicked and evil intentions.

This is the most Yang (male, hot, active, sunny and energetic) time of the year.  Playing, smiling, enjoying and absorbing this inspiring season is essential.  A strong yoga practice or other method is really quite fundamental to keep the body and mind trained for the seasons to come.

Pose of the Month:

Prasarita Padottanasana

Method:

  1. Standing in Tadasana (mountain pose)
  2. Inhale, hands are placed on the hips and spread the legs one leg length distance.
  3. Legs stay straight and unlocked activating the thigh muscles, allowing the thighs to roll in and therefore opening the lower back and sacrum.
  4. Exhale, chest/heart leading forward as the buttocks lengthen back and crown of the head extends forward.
  5. Notice the weight on the feet, allowing the arches to support the weight.
  6. If the hands may comfortably touch the ground hold onto the big toes with your peace fingers, keeping the spine elongated.

Modifications: Start with the knees unlocked and have a wall approximately arm length away. As the crown of the head and buttocks move away from each other and the torso lead by the chest moves parallel to the floor, place the hands on the wall.

Benefits:

  1. Strengthens the legs and limbers up the back body/ our armour/shell.
  2. Improves mobility and circulation in the hips and lower back.
  3. Opens the bladder channels.

TCM Sessions available in Richmond (4A-11460 Voyageur Way) and Vancouver (303-2730 Commercial drive at 11th ave).

Recipe of the Month:

Very Berry Smoothie
1/3 cup blueberries
1/3 cup raspberries
½ banana
1 tbs. Flax oil
1 tbs. Flax ground (for roughage) optional
1/3 cup yogurt (organic/plain)
1/3 cup of (either: almond/soy milk, fruit juice)

Blend all ingredients together, serve and eat right away!

Benefits:

Berries are full of easily assimable nutrients that are perfect for us in North America.  The idea of eating locally grown foods in the same environment that we live in, is called Macrobiotic eating.  This is eating and living with nature, a fabulous practice for sustainability and health.   Most fruits are cooling and cleansing.  One should us tropical fruits sparingly as they are really suit and can increase candida growth.
