August 2005:
Appreciation! The pendulum swings to complete seasonal apex, the height of summer is now. It is so hot that the natural cycle is to slow down and notice and enjoy what is around us. Taking time to appreciate the thick warm aromas summer offers. Fancying the water that cools and cleanses our bodies. Resting our eyes on the beauty of nature in its full growth and greenery. Abundance of fruit and veggies in the markets, gardens, and forests.
It occurs to me that all beings and things prosper from the opportunity to collect and absorb the heat, the yang, ultimately the prana (life force, energy).
Gather and assimilate the natural beauty that is handed to us, and reap the benefits of the joy and laughter that inspires us to be more authentic and appreciative beings.

Pose of the Month
Downward Facing Dog
Adho mukha Svanasana
Method:
Lying face down on the ground, feet shoulder width and toes tucked underneath, hands will be placed by the shoulders and fingers fanned facing the front of the mat.
Exhale, using the power of the arms and bandhas draw the buttocks up and back, so that the tailbone is floating as high and far back as possible.
Legs eventually are straightened (bent knees if stiff).
Let the head naturally hang and the gaze will therefore be at the knees.
Hold for seven breaths to one minute.
As you come out lower the buttocks on an exhalation to high plank, then low plank and then on to the floor.
Benefits: According to B.K.S Iyengar, he states that this pose is especially helpful for runners or sprinters. Individuals with heal spurs will benefit immensely. This increases the blood flow to the brain and heart. Circulation increases and promotes a healthy blood pressure (suitable for people with high blood pressure). It prevents and removes stiffness/arthritis in the shoulders and shoulder blades region. It rejuvenates the body and relieves fatigue.

Recipe
of the Month:
Tossed Green Salad:
5-7 cups of assorted greens (spinach, kale, lettuce several types)
½ cup cucumber
2 tomatoes
1/3 cup finely slices red onions
1 sliced red pepper
1 avocado cubed
½ apples chopped + slices
2 tbsp. Finely chopped basil
Roast 1/3 cup of sunflower seeds until golden brown
Add all ingredients together, sunflower seeds are cooled first then serve with you favorite dressing.
Benefits:
Eating fresh veggies in the summer combats the heat. Most vegetables cleanse the body of toxins and purify and renew the blood. Vegetables contain special enzymes that aid in the cleansing process and hold many live vitamins and minerals. This salad has enough ingredients to satiate and fill many aspects of ones nutrition.
Lettuce in particular eaten regularly is beneficial for cooling the body of summer heat conditions; diuretic; sedative; dries damp conditions including edema and digestive ferments and yeasts; contains the most silicon of common vegetables. Leaf lettuce is much richer than head lettuce in nutrients, especially chlorophyll, iron, and vitamins A and C.
