April 2006:

A breath a fresh warm air, the clocks turn forward in promise of more light in our lives. The push of spring is the time of the Liver with the feelings of strong movement and powerful emotions in traditional Chinese medicine. The gift of the liver time/spring is to plan and allow the action to take place with the natural momentum of the universe and the summer season.

With intention of kindness, compassion and generosity every action is worthy and every action is for the greatest benefit for oneself and all others for optimal growth. It is all about intention at this time of the year, what action is to follow for the summer and what is the desired result? Take time to be clear, breathe and ask the questions!

Pose of the Month:

Sirsasana / Headstand

Benefits:
(especially great for students that need brain and memory power)

  • useful for disorders of prolapsed eg. Hemorrhoids
  • rectifies disorders of the reproductive system and glandular systems
  • strengthens the arms, upper back and shoulders
  • increases blood flow to the brain and pituitary gland
  • reverses the effects of gravity on the spine, relieving spinal strain
  • relieves mental and psychological disorders

Method:

1) Spread a blanket fourfold on the floor and kneel near it.

2) Rest the forearms on the center of the blanket.  While doing so take care that the distance between the elbows on the floor is not wider than the shoulders.

3) Interlock the fingers, so that the palms form a cup.  Place the sides of the palms near the little fingers on the blanket.  While going up on to your head or balancing, the fingers should be kept tightly locked.  If there are left loose, the weight of the body falls on them and the arms ache.

4) Rest the crown of the head only on the blanket, so that the back of the head touches the palm, which are cupped.  Do not rest the forehead or the back of the head, just the crown of the head on the blanket.

5) After securing the head position, raise the knees from the floor by moving the toes closer to head.

6) Exhale, take a gentle swing from the floor and lift the legs off the ground with bent knees.  Take the swing in such a way that both feet leave the floor simultaneously.  When once this position is secured, follow the various stages of the leg movement (option of one foot at a time).  Raising them eventually straight up to the ceiling.

7) After staying in the final position to capacity, from one to five minutes, flex the knees and slide down to the floor in the reverse order.

Recipe of the Month:

Yellow split pea Dahl
31/2 cups of water
1 cup of yellow split peas (soaked for 1-2 hours)
1 large yellow onion diced
2 garlic cloves crushed
2 tbsp fresh ginger chopped
1tsp whole mustard seeds
1tsp turmeric
1tsp cardamom seeds
1 tsp cumin seeds
½ tsp cayenne
Pinch of salt and pepper to taste

Sauté onions, garlic and ginger until onions are translucent.  Cook the yellow split peas for 20-25 minutes until soft and all the water is evaporated.  Then add the Sauté mix with spices (mustard seed, cardamom, cumin, cayenne and turmeric).  Let simmer for 5-10minutes minutes to allow for the flavors to seep in.    Serve on Rice, Millet, Quinoa or your grain of choice or as a side dish with vegetables.

Benefits:
According to Paul Pitchford, Peas are sweet in flavor; tonify the spleen-pancreas and stomach; harmonizes digestion and reduce the effect of an overworked, excessive liver on the stomach and spleen-pancreas: reducing vomiting, hiccups, belching and coughing; diuretic; mildly laxative.  Also used for spasms, edema, constipation, and skin eruptions such as carbuncles and boils.
